From Vision to Proof: Soil Deal Fast-Tracks Farm Futures

Miraterra's buy of Trace Genomics blends DNA and Raman tech for sharper soil insights.

A pivotal acquisition is reshaping the trajectory of U.S. regenerative farming. On July 7, 2025, soil analytics specialist Miraterra acquired the assets of Trace Genomics including its IP, in-market products, and lab in Ames, Iowa, fusing two powerful methods of soil analysis into a single, cohesive platform.

Trace Genomics, founded in the Bay Area in 2015, has long been recognized for pioneering DNA-based soil biology analysis. It took a major leap forward in February 2024, raising $10.5 million in a Series B round led by S2G Ventures, Ajax Strategies, and Rabo Ventures. That funding fueled its commercial expansion and recognition as a leader in soil DNA intelligence.

By merging Trace's DNA-driven soil microbiome insights with Miraterra's rapid Raman spectroscopy capabilities, the combined team now offers a fuller, faster, and more accurate picture of soil health, spanning biological, chemical, and structural dimensions. Anchored in Ames, Iowa, the acquisition also strengthens service access for growers across the American heartland.

The move is strategic in both credibility and innovation. As pressure mounts on food brands to prove environmental impact, robust and auditable soil data has become crucial. "The integration of Trace's technology, lab, and team accelerates our ability to deliver breakthrough soil to table measurement at scale," said Miraterra CEO Nate Kelly.

Analysts note that the acquisition could challenge traditional soil labs and fragmented startups. With an integrated platform spanning biology, mineralogy, and hydrology, Miraterra positions itself as a frontrunner in carbon markets, sustainability programs, and supply chain verification. This consolidation reflects an industry shift toward end-to-end solutions rather than siloed services.

Still, challenges lie ahead in integrating different testing systems and ensuring farmer-friendly data accessibility. But momentum is clear. The narrative is evolving: instead of questioning whether regenerative farming works, the focus is now on quantifying how well and at what scale it performs.

With this acquisition, Miraterra turns regenerative agriculture from vision into velocity, charting a future where farming is measured, proven, and powered by science.
